Background
Academic research in the medical field is of no
value unless it is developed into applications that can improve
health. To meet this need Karolinska Institutet took the initiative
to establish Karolinska Institutet Innovations AB
(KIAB), part of KI Innovation System. We at Karolinska Development
now enable innovations coming out of Nordic academic and research
institutions to be developed in to products that deliver benefits
to human health, and give the best possible financial return for
all parties involved in their development.
We have our roots in the venture capital companies Karolinska Development
I and Karolinska Development II, which were formed in 2003 and 2005
respectively to secure seed financing for the many innovations coming
from researchers at the Karolinska Institute. Over a short period
of time they demonstrated the ability to advance life science innovations
towards commercially viable products at a competitive pace using
a highly cost effective approach. We are now a substantial
investor in several of the life science companies with
products in different development stages, that had their initial
financing from Karolinska Development l and Karolinska Development
ll. In contrast to the previous venture capital companies, Karolinska
Development provides evergreen investment affording more flexibility
to grow business opportunities to achieve the optimum exit point,
for both owners and innovators.
About half of all innovations come from KIAB which is a life science
incubator specializing in early stage support, creating startup
companies based on academic inventions . KIAB annually reviews a
significant number of inventions and innovative ideas from a large
number of leading Nordic academic institutions. Karolinska Institutet
is one of the leading medical universities in the world with more
than 2000 researchers publishing about 4000 reviewed scientific
papers annually.
Through an exclusive agreement we have the right of first refusal
to all innovations from KIAB, enabling us to invest in the best
commercial start up opportunities that are reviewed by KIAB.
