Alzheimer's disease is among the neurodegenerative diseases that burden society most in terms of socioeconomic costs. These diseases affect not only 25 million patients worldwide1 in the form of degenerating changes in behavior, cognitive ability and general quality of life, but also lead to physical and mental stress on caregivers and relatives. No cure or disease-modifying pharmaceuticals for Alzheimer's are available; only palliative treatment options such as acetyl cholinesterase inhibitors like Aricept, Exelon, Razadyn and Memantine, which block glutamate receptors. Karolinska Development has three portfolio projects that are developing pharmaceuticals aimed at actual disease relief for Alzheimer's. These may also be effective for certain other neurodegenerative diseases.
