Diseases affecting the eye pose a major challenge for health care providers in the coming years. Partly, this is due to the aging population of many parts of the world. The prevalence of age-related macular degeneration for example is expected to rise sharply during the next decade from around 2 million affected in the US today to a projected 3 million in 2020, causing an increased need in special care and medication.
